Christ Episcopal Church
Christ Episcopal Church was established in Charlottesville in 1824. The original structure
was replaced in 1898 with a church in the late Gothic style that was popular at the turn
of the century.
Christ Episcopal Church hired Train & Partners Architects to look at the existing
facilities as well as to master plan the church's entire city block "precinct". This master
plan looks forward, past immediate needs, to the next century and will be used to guide the
church in its land use and purchase decisions.
Addressed as an immediate need were handicapped accessibility and organization of all
support spaces. These included the parish hall and kitchen functions, classrooms,
childcare, community outreach programs, and back of house liturgical needs. To satisfy
the pressing need for more space for the growing church, Train & Partners planned an
addition to be phased as needed. The addition, and any future work planned, is to be
sympathetic to the existing buildings in the residential neighborhood, capable of fitting
in with subtle scale modulations, yet retain the significance and importance of a
religious structure.
